Peckham 11kV Cable Route Installation

Construction of a new 11kV cable route through busy South London streets, including excavation and ducting, installation of a pre-cast substation, cable pulling and full highway reinstatement.

The challenge

The route ran through a heavily congested utility corridor beneath busy residential and high street sections, with existing services at shallow depths and limited working width. Several sections sat on live bus routes and loading areas, so access, parking suspensions and permit windows had to be tightly managed around local businesses and residents.

Our approach

Trial holes and service scans were carried out ahead of excavation, with safe digging practice around all live apparatus. Works were sequenced in short sections to keep the highway open wherever possible, with Chapter 8 barriers, clear signage and close coordination with the traffic management contractor and bus operators. The pre-cast substation was craned into position under a lift plan, and cable was installed with monitored winching before permanent reinstatement.

Outcome

The route was completed on programme with no service strikes and no reportable incidents. Reinstatement passed highway authority inspection first time, and the site was left clean and fully open to traffic and pedestrians.
