Iron Acton 132kV Cable Installation
Installation of a single 132kV circuit — three separate phases plus 120mm earthing — from the customer point of connection to the National Grid point of supply, with one intermediate joint bay.
The challenge
The installation sat within a National Grid outage window, so critical dates had to be met to avoid delaying energisation. Persistent wet weather made positioning the heavily loaded drum trailer difficult, and all works were carried out under National Grid safety rules with an experienced Grid engineer supervising.
Our approach
Ducts installed by others were brushed and proven before any cable was pulled. Cables were installed using a 4t monitored cable winch and 6t motorised drum trailer, with continuous tension monitoring to keep well within the 24kN design limit — a maximum of 3.7kN was recorded. Clear signage, controlled exclusion zones around plant and daily housekeeping kept the site safe and secure, supported by proactive communication with National Grid throughout.
Outcome
Completed on programme and within budget, with all inspection and test documentation fully completed and evidenced. Cables were left cut and capped ready for jointing and termination, and National Grid provided positive feedback on both workmanship and site housekeeping.
