NW10 132kV Cable Duct Install

Installation of six 132kV Class 1 ducts in a dual-circuit formation with CBS surround through a densely serviced residential and commercial corridor in North West London, including full excavation, ducting and reinstatement.

The challenge

The route passed through an exceptionally congested utility corridor including high-pressure gas mains and live 132kV and 33kV cables, within busy residential streets. Road and parking closures affected residents and local businesses, while fixed permit windows and critical connection dates left no room for delay.

Our approach

Trial hole surveys were completed ahead of design to confirm service positions, and VAL produced the temporary works design for the deep excavations. Working areas were set up with Heras fencing and Chapter 8 barriers, with clear signage throughout. Safe digging practices were maintained around all live services, and close coordination with the traffic management contractor — including out-of-hours working on the most sensitive sections — kept disruption to a minimum. The site was left clean, secure and safe at the end of every shift.

Outcome

Delivered on programme and within budget despite the challenges, with all client quality documentation completed and evidenced. The local highways authority audit identified no snagging or remedial works, and feedback from residents and the local authority was positive throughout.
